Earliest Known Ancestor: Robert MCDONALD (son of John MCDONALD) b. 12 Jun 1799, Albany Co., NY married Nancy WARD, b. 27 Jan 1805, Albany Co., NY. They were married abt. 1821, had 11 children, including my great-grandfather Wesley (Robert) MCDONALD, below. Robert MCDONALD died 15 Nov 1883 in Darien, Genesee Co., NY. Nancy WARD MCDONALD died 14 Feb 1877 in Darien, Genesee Co., NY. Both are buried in Darien Cemetery, Town of Darien, Genesee Co., NY. Nancy WARD MCDONALD's maiden name comes from the 1890 biography of her son-in-law David Holmes Corwin (who married daughter Elizabeth). Wesley Robert MCDONALD, son of Robert MCDONALD and Nancy WARD, was born 08 Mar 1845 in Schoharie Co., NY. Married Mary Belle RICE, daughter of Alonzo RICE and Mary Ellen ALT, on 20 Dec 1877, Springfield, Clark Co. OH. Wesley died in Springfield, OH on 11 Mar 1925. MCDONALD WAS my brick wall. but now solved. My mother's memoirs state that this family originated in Batavia, Genessee County, NY and all of Wesley's records indicate he was indeed, born in NY. His death certificate (completed by his wife, Belle) states Father's name as Robert and mother's name unknown. NEW EVIDENCE: Wesley McDonald (listed as Wesley...not Robert W.) found in the 1865 NY State Census living with his parents, Robert and Nancy MCDONALD, in Richmondville, Schoharie Co., NY. Wesley was age 21, and his parents Robert, age 66; and Nancy, 61. Also still living at home were his brother Hiram, age 41, single; and sister Malinda, age 25, single; and another sister D.(elphina) Augusta, age 15. Wesley McDonald found in LaGrange Co., Indiana on the 1870 Census with a wife (Juliette nee MOAK) and female child born in Jan., listed as "Carrie", age 4 months born in Jany 1870.....matches the birth info known about Bertha. Juliette ("Ettie") MOAK MCDONALD was b. abt. 1848 in Indiana, the daughter of Peter MOAK and Lovica SATCHELL. Juliette died 16 Dec 1872, leaving the infant Bertha with her father Wesley, who moved to Springfield, Ohio and married 2nd, Mary Belle RICE MCDONALD. Listed in the "1882 History LaGrange County, Indiana" by F.A.Battey & Co.., - Van Buren Township, is one McDonald (John) from the State of New York, and this was Wesley's brother and family: "JOHN MC DONALD is the son of Robert and Nancy McDonald, both of whom were born in Albany County, N.Y., the former June 12, 1799, and the latter January 27, 1805. They were married about 1821, in their native State, where they are yet residents. Robert McDonald represented the county of Schoharie, N.Y., in the State Legislature, and in his family were eleven children. John, the subject, was born May 14, 1831, in New York, where he was married, January 23, 1856, to Barbara Pitcher. She died, October 14, 1857, leaving one child. In 1858, Mr. McDonald went to St. Joseph County, Mich., and was there married to his present wife, September 18, 1861. She was Mary C. Purdy, a native of New York, where she was born November 22, 1836. They came to La Grange County in 1864, where he bought a farm, and settled, soon after removing to his present location. He owns 240 acres of excellent land, and has a family of four children - E.B., born in New York, October 14, 1857; N. Medie and N. Mettie (twins), born July 8, 1870, and Emily Dell, May 10, 1873." Robert & Nancy McDonald were listed on the 1850 adn 1860 Census in Schoharie Co., NY with a son the right age to be Wesley and the child's name was listed as Robert W. (Insert, the 1865 New York State Census lists him as Wesley McDonald) In 1880, Robert & Nancy McDonald were found in Darien, Genesee Co., NY and some of the rest of the family in Batavia.....hence the family history passed down as originating in Batavia, NY, when they actually came from Schoharie & Albany, NY in earlier times. Mary Belle Rice was Wesley's second wife. The 1880 Census lists Wesley and the following family living in Springfield, pg 358C: 209 Pearl St. MCDONALD, Wesley, age 32, machinist, born in NY (parents place of birth is blank) Belle, wife, age 24, born in OH, and both parents born in OH Bertha, daugher, age 10 (this was from Wesley's first marriage), at school, born in IN, mother b. IN Siff G. McDonald, brother, Machinist, age 35, born in IN, (parents placeof birth is blank). I believe this Siff McDonald to be Sephroneus, who was listed in the Robert & Nancy McDonald Household in 1850. Additional evidence of this brother is a family heirloom in my possession which is a silver cake stand engraved as follows: "Presented to S. G. MCDONALD by the employees of C.B.V.K. Co, Springfield Ohio 1877." This S.G. McDonald could only be Sephroneus G. MCDONALD who was living with Wesley & Belle in 1880 and obviously Belle ended up with the Cake Stand and it passed down the generations to me. Wesley McDonald and family were listed in the Springfield City Directory for the years 1890-91: Springfield 1891 City Directory: Wesley McDonald knife finisher 209 Pearl Springfield OH 1890, 1891 Bertha M. McDonald saleslady 209 Pearl Springfield OH 1890, 1891 By 1900, the family had moved to St. Mary's, Auglaize Co. OH. They were on the 1900 and 1910 Census there. My mother's memoirs state that Wesley was an Engineer for the St. Mary's Resevoir during this period. On his retirement, the family returned to Springfield. Wesley's obituary appeared in the Springfield Newspaper: Springfield (O.) Daily News, Thursday, March 12, 1925 Funeral Services for Wesley MCDONALD, 80, who died Wednesday at his home in the Valley pike, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the residence. Burial will be in Ferncliff cemetery. Mr. MCDONALD, who had been in failing health for several months, suffered a stroke of apoplexy about two weeks ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Belle MCDONALD; two daughters, Mrs. C(harles) W. (Bertha) FOLEY of Minneapolis and Mrs. A(rthur) L. (Flora Belle) FOLEY of Springfield, and two sons, A(rthur) L. MCDONALD of Youngstown, and Fred W. MCDONALD of Springfield; one sister and six grandchildren.
