The earliest known ancestor is Alexander UNDERWOOD, b. 1688 in Baltimore, MD.  He married Mary Jane HARRIS abt. 1710 in Delaware Co., PA and they had 13 children.  Their son, Benjamin UNDERWOOD b. 1728 was the father of Willing UNDERWOOD b. 1761 in Warrington Co, PA.  He was the father of Joseph UNDERWOOD, b. 1795 in Fayette Co, PA who married Frances MARSH 14 April 1814 in Columbiana Co, OH and they were the parents of Amos UNDERWOOD.

Amos UNDERWOOD, b. 05 Apr 1823 in Columbiana Co, OH. He was the son of Joseph Underwood (1795-1893) of Fayette Co., PA and Frances MARSH (1795-1881).

Amos married Sarah Jane ROSSELL, b. on the same day...05 Apr 1823 in the same County of Ohio, although they didn't meet until they were 18 years old.

Amos and Sarah met while she was visiting at a brother's home in Steubenville,Ohio. Four weeks later the young people drove to Paris,Pa. not being able to obtain a marriage license in Ohio, as they were not of legal age.
Folded in a small box considerably less than an inch square, our Great-Great-Great Grandmother Sarah kept among her treasures, was her marriage certificate, written on
common notepaper in 1842, though yet perfectly legible. It is as follows:
Paris, Oct.11th,1842, I do hereby certify that the marriage ceremony between Amos Underwood and Sarah Rossell was celebrated by me on this day. J.M. Galloway.
This little story was found in a much larger newspaper story from the Bellaire Independent, dated July 7,1904, and it was headed, "Bellaire's Oldest Couple, Amos Underwood and Wife 81 years old, April 5th last.

AMOS UNDERWOOD, general variety store, North Lewisburg; was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1823.  He is a son of Joseph and Frances Underwood, who were probably born in New Jersey, and in an early day settled in Pennsylvania, and, still later, located in the above county in Ohio, where they lived many years.  They removed to Stark Co., Ohio, where they now reside at advanced ages.  Our subject labored in the mill till 15 years of age, at which time he went on the farm and remained three years; he then learned the gunsmith trade, which he did not follow long.  He next learned the mason's trade in West Liberty, and afterward became partner to his boss, with whom he remained nine years, and then went to Whiteside Co., Ill.,  and ran a ferry on Rock River for eight months.  He returned to Quincy, Ohio, and again resumed his trade (mason), but afterward came to North Lewisburg, and erected many of the fine brick structures which stand as monuments to his skill.  After several years' of labor  in North Lewisburg, he went to Michigan, where he enjoyed himself in hunting and recruiting his strength for several months, then returned to North Lewisburg, and engaged in his present business.  He carries full stock, consisting of most everything usually found in any retail house.  In 1840, he was married to Sarah Rossell.  They have three children  -- Frances S. J., Joseph R. C. and John R. A.  Mrs. Underwood  was born the same day, month and year as her husband, viz., April 5, 1823.  He is a member of the Disciple Church, his wife of the Christians, though both were reared Quakers.  He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, belonging to the Chapter and Blue Lodge.  He is one of the charter members in the home lodge.

Front Page
Is Bellaire's Oldest Couple
Amos UNDERWOOD and his wife, Sarah UNDERWOOD, Bellaire's oldest living couple, have been married over 62 years.   Despite the burden of more than 81 years they are both hale and hearty, enjoying very nearly unimpaired the faculties of sight and hearing so seldom vouchsafed to people so advanced in life.   Excellent health continues to be their portion, and they enjoy from day to day the blessings coming to them from a well spent life and the esteem of a host of friends.   The beauties of nature appeal to them as it did in their younger days when they roamed the fields and lanes when the daily work was done, or when they studied the handiwork of God in the forest on the Sabbath day.   Too learned in the science of living to fret or worry, their life is placid and happy as the day is long.   That they may enjoy the fullness of life for many years is the wish of all.
Amos UNDERWOOD was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, in 1823.   He worked in a mill as a lad until 15 years of age, when he went onto a farm and remained three years; he then learned the gunsmith trade, but did not follow it long.   He next learned the mason’s trade in West Liberty, Ohio, and afterward became partner to his boss, with whom he worked nine years.   He went to Whiteside county, Ill, and ran a ferry for a few months, returning to Quincy, Ohio, to resume his mason trade and later going to North Lewisburg where many fine business blocks remain as monuments to his skill.   He came to Michigan on a hunting trip of several months duration, recruiting his strength, and then engaged in the general mercantile business in North Lewisburg.
Sara ROSSELL was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, April 15, 1923 - the same day Mr. UNDERWOOD first saw the light - though they did not meet until they were 18 years of age.   <Note:   Date of birth is actually April 05, based on 3 other primary sources. JMW>   She lived in the county of her birth till she met her future husband while she was visiting at a brother’s home in Steubenville.   Four weeks later the young people drove to Paris, Pa. -- not being able to obtain a marriage license in Ohio through not being of age - and were married.
Folded in a small box considerably less than an inch square, Mrs. UNDERWOOD keeps among her treasures her marriage certificate, written on common note paper 62 years ago, though as yet perfectly legible.   The wording is as follows:
Paris, Oct. 11, 1842
I do hereby certify that the marriage ceremony between Amos UNDERWOOD and Sarah ROSSELL was celebrated by me on this day.
J. M. GALLOWAY
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. UNDERWOOD:   Frances S. J. EVANS of Bellaire, Joseph R. C. UNDERWOOD of Union City, Ind., and John R. A. UNDERWOOD of Aberdeen, Wash.   They have 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. UNDERWOOD becoming reminiscent, tells of their early life together, how they spent every hour possible in the open air and roamed the fields and woods together.   The first two years of their married life Mr. UNDERWOOD worked in the coal mines, and rose at 4 o’clock to go to work.   At noon his wife carried his diner, and remained with him knitting until his day’s work was done, and then the rest of the afternoon they spent in the forest.   She looks affectionately at her aged helpmeet, and says, "He was always a good man to me."   She says her life has been happy, and that from her own experience she is a firm believer in short courtships.   Hers, at least, of four weeks duration has turned out happily.
Fifty years ago, in 1854, it was, Mr. UNDERWOOD went to Iowa City to work and put in the summer laying pavement.   He was taken with the cholera, and came near dying.   Becoming able to travel, he came home with but one gold dollar to show for his summer’s wages.   Mrs. UNDERWOOD, breaking in at this point, says, "We had money, though.   He never went away without leaving me plenty."   In connection with his Iowa City trip, however, it might be mentioned that Mr. UNDERWOOD remembers Chicago of that day.   Dirty green water stood in ditches at the sides of the streets, and there was little to foretell its growth to the great city of the year 1904.
For 10 years Mr. UNDERWOOD ran his general or variety store at North Lewisburg, carrying a stock of about $3,000.   He did some contracting, however.   His sons, who were both masons, took the lead in that section when he retired from active participation in building operations.
About 22 years ago Mr. UNDERWOOD sold out his store and moved to Bellaire, where he embarked in the hardware business.   This, the first regular hardware here, he run for a year and then sold out to F. E. TURRELL   Different enterprises claimed his attention after this.   For a time it was a boat livery, which he run for several years.   He still has several boats.   He worked two years in one of the factories, and has also done much mason work since selling out the hardware.   He built the cellar and did the other mason work on the big $8,000 residence of Henry RICHARDI, on the W. J. NIXON and F. W. BECHTOLD residence, the W. E. HICKOX house in the country which burned down, etc.   He has never been idle.
He fished three years on the island in Intermediate Lake, both winter and summer, more for his health than anything else, and for five winters fished the lower lakes as a business.   Two years ago he was camping on the island on the upper lake when the dancing pavilion blew down, at which time on of the resorters sustained a broken leg.   Mr. UNDERWOOD had deserted his tent to take refuge in the pavilion as the storm broke, and was caught in the wreck, sustaining injuries to his side which he has never recovered from.
Mr. UNDERWOOD is proud of the fact that as contractor on brick and stone work he never put in a bid for a building that he did not get the contract, even though others bid lower.   On a Quaker church at North Lewisburg other bids were $100 lower than his, but his reputation for conscientious work caused the job to be let to him.   His rules of life have always been to be honest and honorable, and to owe no man.
Mr. UNDERWOOD became a Mason 51 years ago at West Liberty, Ohio.   He was first King and a charter member of Star chapter, Royal Arch Masons, at North Lewisburg, Ohio; joined the chapter at Bellefontaine, also going through the council.   After coming to Bellaire, Mr. UNDERWOOD took the Scottish Rite degrees and is a thirty-second degree Mason.   He was a student of Masonry, and always held office with the exception of two years.   He was always prompt, and always attending to business; never missed a meeting, or a Masonic funeral or other ceremony.   Several corner stones have been laid by him.   For a great many years Mr. UNDERWOOD "prompted" nearly every candidate in the towns where he lived, being well posted and of excellent memory.
He was a charter member of Bellaire blue lodge and chapter, but would take no office other than that of tyler.   This office he held in both lodges until he retired about two years ago.   He is Bellaire’s oldest Mason.
In politics Mr. UNDERWOOD has voted the Republican ticket beginning with Fremont, following the Under-the-Oaks convention at Jackson.   His first vote as a young man turned 21 was for Henry Clay.
Mr. UNDERWOOD and his wife came to Bellaire for the betterment of their health, and have a pleasant home at the intersection of Seneca, Park, Durham, and South streets.   Their little home was one of the best residences in Bellaire when built a great many years ago.   Fine fruit trees are found in their yard and grape vines twine along the eaves.   That they may enjoy their pleasant home for many years is the wish of all.
