Janie was born and raised in this area west of Pensacola, Florida. Many happy days of my childhood were spent exploring the remote waterways and woods that are now part of this park, purchased and developed by the State of Florida in the 1980's. Preserved and protected by the State, Perdido Key across the Lagoon is partially accessible by paved road a short drive from the park. It is a unique opportunity to view the Sugar-white Sand dunes and rare Sea Oats that frame the Gulf of Mexico.

Located on the Intercoastal waterway in Grande Lagoon (also called Big Lagoon), the 700-acre Big Lagoon Park has a fully-developed campground of 120 sites. It also has a large picnic pavilion, 500 seat amphitheater with a meeting room and full kitchen, three swimming areas, a dock, and a boat ramp. There is canoeing available and 3 miles of boardwalks and hiking trails that lead to scenic areas of the park. It is a unique habitat of well-preserved sand scrub and salt marshes typical of this part of NW Florida.

View East. Across the Intercoastal Waterway that runs through Grande (or Big) Lagoon is the Perdido Key on the Gulf of Mexico

View of the Intracoastal Waterway on Grande Lagoon. (I don't remember what was so funny here - probably something Dave said!)

Long Pond. Before the State purchased this land, Long Pond was known only to the local duck hunters and adventurous explorers who knew how to find it (like me) - a good 1 mile hike through the woods & marsh from the highway or a lovely 2 mile hike from the private beach in our family neighborhood (Seaglades)on the Lagoon. Now it affords canoeing and fishing opportunities in Big Lagoon State Park.

View West. Distant private Condos on the Gulf of Mexico. The State of Florida has purchased most of the undeveloped areas of this Key to preserve and protect this beautiful piece of Florida from future development.

View South. A point of the Park juts into the Lagoon. A good view of Perdido Key across the waterway and the Gulf of Mexico, beyond.
